My child is not a downs-child!

I don't know what it is, but I cant stand when people talk about kids with special needs or with a disability like the ADHD kid or the downs kid.....Kristofer is not a downs kid! He is just a normal kid with down syndrome. And here in Iceland people call them downsara, I mean what is that?? I don't know why this get´s so on my nerves but it gets under my skin and makes me want to scream!

I was at a meeting about Kristofer today and I was told that Kristofer has down syndrome like 10 times in these 45 minutes and in every other sentence....I know he has down syndrome and I have known since the day he was born and there is no need to tell me that like I don't know. I don't understand why they cant just talk about Kristofer as a persona and not having the need to say it out loud every 5 minutes that he has downs. But the good thing is that most people that work with Kristofer just talk about him...Kristofer, but I just had to get this out!

The weather this winter and the dark days made me think of my family private island Hjörsey. There are no words that can describe this beauty of nature! We have no electricity, no tv, no bathtub or shower….just like the old days and I love it. This island is the third bigges island out side of Iceland, so its pretty big! A lot of people use to live there back in the days, but my grade grandfather bought the island later on. When I was little I use to stay there the hole summer, we would be up to at last 10 kids at the time just playing and running around the island, chasing horses and horseback ride. These past days I have been daydreaming about my island and I’m so excited to go back there this summer, so I had to share some pictures with you so you get the idea what I’m talking aboutJ Im so lucky to have this island in my family and there are not that many places left like this one, were you go back few decades and live with the nature and what was back then….

Well I know it has been a while since I blogged. I have been
busy writing my Master thesis in Social work and I’m almost done with that….so
I will get my life back! A lot has happened since last time, I won few backing
competitions, one for chocolate cookie and one for the best cupcake of the year
2011, maybe I will post the recipe on here soon.

The reason I’m
blogging today though is that I wanted to share with you an interview of us
that was on the news last night, it was about Kristofer and our story. I know
you don’t understand a word but at last you can see Kristofer and his sister
playing and having fun. I have gotten a few emails from people that have had
children with special needs and others telling me that I touched there hart…but
that was the whole reason why we decided to on this show.

2nd Birthday!

On february 27th Kristofer turned 2 years old!!! and one week before his birthday he started walking :) that was a good birthday present to himself I would say.

The house was full of guests and Kristofer had so much fun....he is not that interested in open his present’s jet so he got is big cousin taking good care of that….and he didn’t hate that I tell you.

Well me and Kiddi was talking the other day and we was always hoping for Kristofer to start walking before christmas.....that didn´t happen so we said before his two years old birthday.....but it looked like he would not make that eather.....svo we said summer. But the other day when Kristófer was playing he just stood up all by himself and did it again and again, then few days later he start walking!! We are so proud and happy for him and he is also very proud of himself, he clap´s his hands for few minutes every time he walks :) that is the cutest!

After his sister was born on june 19th he has always been very intrested in her and likes to play with her, now she is 8 month old and is standing up on her own and walking with the furniture.....I dont know if that is way Kristofer start walking or if she is so quick before him....but I guess soon they will both be walking.

on february 27th Kristófer vill turn 2 years old and we are having is b-day party on saturday.....Cars theme, so mama needs to start practicing baking and cake decorating! o boy! I will post picturse of his birthday and the big birthdayboy after the weekend!

Now Kristofer is 20 months old and my litle one that got the name Hildur Emelía 4 months, time flies!! Hildur is my mothers name and she was very proud that her grandchild got her name.....but she also told me that she felt old about it hahahaha....o well! Her christening was very memorable, the priest was so tense and kind of "out of it" with litlebit of alzheimer so the ceromony was repeated two times! and we said the same prayer 3 times in a row! I had to try to behave myself not to laugh out loud up at the altar but the hole church was! but at last she got her name and we will never forget this day.

Well Kristofer still likes his sister a lot and thinks she is very interested and wants to pat her head and say aaahhhhh all the time it is the cutest! Kristofer is now walking against all the furniture and is standing up almost everywere, this is such a big step and I'm so proud, all of a sudden he got so big when he starting doing this, and is not only crawling on his bum all the time. And now we are hoping that he will start walking around christmas, but kristofer is so careful that he will not do that until he is 100% save on his feet, we know he can do it already because he has been on his own for few seconds and the time he realized it he falls on his bum.....but hopefully sooner then later cause I'm getting kind of tired carrying the both of them all over the place.

He has also gotten very interested in the TV and is standing almost IN the TV and pointing at it, not so popular with the parents!

Kristofer is doing so well at his kindergarten he just started Early Behavioral Intervention that is usually used on children with autism but is working so well, he is only the second baby with Down syndrome here in Iceland that get this training and we are so happy with the outcome so far, the other boy that had it at his kindergarten stopped using a diaper at age of 3!! and he knows all the letters in the alphabet and a hole lot more. Kristofer is doing very well and is starting to say so many words and I think he knows around 30 signs. He is already making his number 2 in his potty almost every night so we se what will be.

Well it´s been a while since I wrote something on here last time so I wanted to write few lines about what has been happening over here in Iceland.

I know it has been a while since I wrote something on here, but having two babys staying at home can be tough and some things you are going to do during the day...well you just cant get over everything.

Well on June 19th a litle perfect girl was born at Reykavík´s hostpital, she was 8.4 lbs and 20.9 inch long.

The delivery only took about 4 hours something else then last time that was over 24 hours, and it felt good that we could just go home the day after and not have to stay at the NICU. We are so happy and we cant belive that we have two babys now, because two years ago we had none.

Kirstófer is so happy with his little sister and wants to kiss her and hug her all the time (sometimes little to much) hahahaha but at last he is very nice to her and thinks she is a very exciting new member of our family.

Well now I'm almost 31 weeks in my pregnancy, time flies!! But the other day we went to 3D ultrasound to see the Little baby girl and it was amazing. I just wanted to share one picture with you guys, we saw her open her eyes and smile!

And Kristofers kindergarten teacher Greta she is always taking pictures of Kristófer doing all kind of stuff with the other kids, so here are few new pictures!! Kristófer just started to sign few signs and we are so happy with that!! His favorite is ball, duck and teddy bear and he even says the words with the signs like ba when he signs ball! and he knows how to say mom and dad and makes car sounds :)

Hi everyone,

What a great day today. Our baby boy just turned 1 years old, time really flies, its hard to beleave a year has passed this quickly.

We started the day @ 9.30 in our regular Saturday baby swimming class and this litle guy is improving every week. For example, we have these litle plastic rings that he holds on the bottom and I hold at the top. Few weeks ago he only held for a few seconds on is own, but today i put him on the pool bank and made him grap the rings and he just jumped right in the pool while holding the rings and held on for approx 3-4 minutes. Kristofers physiotherapist tells us that his weekness is in his hand strength but his legs are very strong and have been since he was born, importantly the hand strenth is radically improving these days.

After swimming, we went home and helped mom to get ready for the first birthdayparty, ate and slept for about 3 hours ,the swimming really drains the batteries, just tells me that its utilizing every muscle in his body, he never sleeps as good as after baby swimming J

The party was great, alot of relatives and friends came over to celebrate our litle guy´s birthday. He was happy and smiling the whole time and got a pile og gifts.

Recently for the last month or so, we ´ve really been foucsing more on his training and it is really paying off. He can stand while hold/leaning forvever now and is able to push him self up to a crawling position, but needs a litle more hip strength to hold it on a slippery base. His focus is getting alot better and he is starting to be aware of many thins happinig around him. We can now show him a car and he makes an engine sound with his lips, he can do the sign for falling, ball and says mamamama...dont know if thats just something but its really cute. He drinks juice with a straw and picks up cheerios with thumb and index finger. Two teeths are up so this is all heading in the right direction :D

Last but not least he is becoming a big brother. Thelma is due on the 18th of june.

Well christmas was grate and I have never ever seen so many presents!! Kristófer got around 30 present so we took all night opening them and writing down from who they wore from.

Kristófer can sit for hours playing now and I love to play with him sitting across, but now we are practicing him standing up on his own, he can stand ok....but not get up on his own though.

Well since we havent been swimming in a while we just make it up by going in the tub in our new tub chair that we got! in January we start going back to swimming class and we cant wait, but til then we just stay in the tub, here are some picturse of Kristófer.

Well it has been a while since we wrote a blog on here. We have had the flue....the hole family and so much to do at school and finals, but I will try to be active from now on.

Hi,

Here are a couple of videos of Kristofer and his workouts. The buckets are his favorite toys at the moment, when i shot this video he had already been playing with them for 20 minutes sitting uppright like in this video. When i took him away from the buckets to change his diaper he got preety mad.

I noticed when i put all the buckets together...placing the next biggest after the other etc.. he would shake the apart untill they would all fall out of each other.

He did this tree times so i decided to shoot a video of as he did it for the fourth time.

He turns 7 months next sunday and we, and the doctors/therapists that we have met are all very excited about his progress.

His kindergarten did an evaluation on him, which we have not recived on a document, but the lady that he spends most of his time with said that his motorskills are slightly above the average 6 month old (with no disabilities) so you guys can imagine how excited we are. Few things are a little below average, including his vocal ability, which has improved alot since she did that evaluation.

He now says ; da da da da...which is not daddy in the Icelandic language but i´m still pretty happy about it :D.

He also makes a car like sound with his lips... I haven´t got it on tape but i will post it later.

Bumbo in the tub!!

Thanks to Sara P who got this grate idea to put Max in his bumbo in the tub with his sister. Well last night I tried it with Kristófer and he loved it! He could play with his toys in the tub and sit there splashing with his feet. I love it too so we will definitely keep on doing it. Here are some pics :)

This weekend has been so nice, I would like to have more weekends during the week...maybe two :) Well we went to our infant swimming on Saturday and Kristófer just loves the water he just smiles his biggest when he goes into the pool. This weekend I also learned how to drink from a sippy cup all by himself! And he is an eater too, he just grasps the spoon and we are not quick enough for him to bring the next one! So I can’t complain about him not eating.

Well this weekend we had alot of fun together. We went to our infat swimming class on Saturday morning, and then we did fun stuff at home.

Here is Kristófer playing with his new toy that his nephew gave him and he is standing on his own and he is only 6 months! And he loves this toy and all the nois that it makes......not his partents so much :)

And here is Kristófer in his walker for the first time, he even figured out how to push himself forward....but just a little, we will practice this more. Kristófer is also trying to sit on his own now and this weekend he sat all by himself for 3 minutes! So hopefully he will be sitting soon!

Kristórfer the litle preschool boy!

Last week Kristófer started his first preschool day. He is only 6 months and it feel’s so strange taking him there, at first I was really nervous because he is so little and I just wanted to stay home with him for few more months, but school is back on and we have to finish these two years we have left so I don’t have a choice but to take him.

The kids in his class are from 10 months so he is the youngest. He has this great woman named Gréta that takes care of him that is specialized in children’s development and he loves her already so I don’t feel so bad anymore. He has started eating all kinds of food even bred and I feel he has grown a few months’ since he started going to preschool. His physical therapist also comes to the preschool to exercise with him so when I pick him up and we go home I can just be his mom and nothing else and that I love. Before I always felt bad that I was not training him enough or we did not do this and that….and I didn’t enjoy being his mom as much as I do now. Also they use sign language all the time, when they sing, read and when they talk to each other and I love that, Kristófer can then talk to the other children later on as they all will know the signs This school is not only for kids with special needs, but there is one other boy there who has down syndrome and he is 3 years old and hopefully him and Kristófer will become friends later on.

And another thing….before Kristófer was so sensitive about other children talking or crying that he started to scream and he would not stop until he would turn red and blue….now he’s gotten used to that cause of the other kids at his school that I can now take him everywhere without worrying that he would go bananas!

Well I just wanted to share this with you guys…..hard to let your child go so little to preschool even though I know this will only do good for him!

Will the pain ever go away??

On Saturday night I was going to bed, Kristófer was sleeping in our bed and I laid there next to him and I was watching him sleep. He was so peaceful and adorable and I thought to myself how is it possible to love someone so much!!…..but then I started thinking about his birth and everything that has been going on since he was born. The thought about his birth and when I got him in my arms the feelings and the pain…..I was crying and I could not stop crying, it hurts so much inside, my hart was hurting. Im wondering if this pain will ever go away….will it always hurt so much inside?? Even though you love your child and you have gone forward with life and your baby as it is???

Thank you followers for the comments you guys posted on my fiancé´s latest blog.

I want to share a litle story about Kristofer´s babtizm/christining gift.....

In Iceland most newborns are baptized in about 2-3 months after birth. When we found out about Kristofers problem with his Aorta we and the doctors were not sure if he would be with us very long, or if that he needed a surgery....

My father was like a rock at the hospital when Kristofer was born.

He had already seen him before we new he had DS and left home to download the pictures he took of him on is PC. When he came back to the hospital after i had called him, him and the doctor took Kristofer to the NICU.

My dad advised me that it would be good for us to babtize Kristofer right away...just in case anything would happen, so Kristofer got baptized by my friends father which is a minister in our church on a saturday afternoon at he NICU.

The gift...

My father and i share a passion of motorcycle and cars. Well its my fathers fault that i have the same passion ;) but thats ok i love it.

When my dad was young he bought his first motorcycle in 1974. He was 16 then and the motorcyle was a 1974 HONDA XL 350.

Few years ago my dad was searching for the same type of a bike as a winter restoration project. And one day he did...he was on eBay...like most of the time and stumbled across the same type of motorcycle he had when he was young. That bike was in Ohio....and we live in Iceland. But that was ok since he was going to the U.S. anyway to buy a new SUV for my mom.

He picked up the bike and shipped it to Iceland.

When my father found out he was going to be a grandfather he was so excited....so he made the decision to hurry up and restore the old Honda into a decent shape so he could give it to his first grandchild as a biptizim gift.

Kristofer Karl shares his middle name with his grandfather and my litle brother Jonas Karl. They all own motorcycles....but not me ;)

The pregnancy and the big surprise!

When we found out that I was pregnant we wore very happy as this was our first child, the decision about having a child was hard….you never know when it’s the right time, if you should wait for few more months or years. The pregnancy went really well and I was with a very good health the whole time. The time didn’t go to fast as we was very excited about having our first child, everything had to be ready and perfect for our little baby boy.

After a lot of thought about If we should have the early ultrasound or not at 12 weeks we decided that we wanted to have that done and check if everything was ok with the baby. Most people that I know have had that test done and you just get used to the idea that this is something that is the part of the program, so going to that screening without even the thought is very common with couples here in Iceland. At the screening she was measuring the neck of the baby and it took her a very long time….she said something about that she felt the neck was kind of thick, thicker then usually and that we have to have a blood test done. She talked about some numbers that we did not understand at the time that my probability of having a down syndrome child would be high as I was very young only 26 years old if she only took my age and the thickness of the neck. I was shocked and could not believe this, as I went to this screening just because and never did I think about that something would be wrong with my baby and the news was hard to take. I went to the blood test and went home cause I had to wait for at last 2 days to get the results. I went home and called my mum, we cried and talked about the possibilities if something was wrong with my child. When the blood results came back I had already made up my mind that I would not be having this child if the likelihood of down syndrome would come out high. 2 days later I had a phone call from the nurse telling me that the blood results were real good and that the likelihood of having a baby with downs are not high at all as they were 1/723 and that I would not have to worry about anything at all as I was young and healthy. At that time I did not understand this probability formula that calculates these likelihoods and I was just happy to hear that my baby was fine and I didn’t have to think about something being wrong.
The pregnancy went on and I was feeling good and so excited about the new family member…..

I was due on February 26th, and on February 26th at 7am I told my fiancé that our baby was coming…..I was very excited and I told him that this is as perfect as it can be that he is coming on the exact date and all!! 26 hours later a baby boy was born, a baby that was not expected and not so exciting. At first we did not realize what it was that was wrong or if anything was wrong at all….but I told my mother that was there that he was very strange…. Few ours later after we went into our private room at the hospital the doctor came in the door, I was nursing Kristófer and we had just finish saying how proud and happy we was…..the doctor started looking at him and doing all kinds of test on his body reactions and muscles, after few minutes of silence he asked us if we though he was strange, strange I though??? No I don’t think he is strange at all…..not anymore at least, I just though that this little baby was tired after all the hard work of getting into this world and he would just have to rest. We told the doctor no, and then I asked him if he though he was strange? He told us yes…..and that he thought he looked like baby’s with down syndrome. Down syndrome I say?? And repeat myself few times……he told us yes and that he would have to take a blood test to confirm it, and there he was out the door.
I sat in the room and looked at the baby and thought that I could never keep this baby!! He had down syndrome and that was not what I had planed for my baby, and something like that would/could never happen to us!! We sat in silence and started to cry….our lives were ruined !!

We called our parents who came right away to the hospital…nobody spoke a word and everyone thinking what to say or think. We cried…..and then I said that I could not keep this baby, I did not want to hold him or touch him and I just wanted to tell the doctor to take this baby and I was going home and in a while I would just have another one. Then I thought I would have it adopted….but did anyone want to adopted a baby like that?? The doctor came in again and told us that he had to take the baby to check his heart because 50% of baby’s with downs have a heart failure and need a surgery. We went with the doctor to check his heart and he was talking to an intern what was happening and that he would explain to us later, thoughts like “I hope he is that sick that he will not make it” came to my mind and looked at my baby that had only been in this world for few ours. I thought it would be best for all of us if he would just not make it, because life with down syndrome is no life at all! The doctor told us that he needed to stay in the NICU so they could keep an eye on him, he also needed an extra oxygen, and then he explained to us what he saw in the ultrasound, Kristófers patent ductus arteriosus was still open and his aorta was very tight so the bloodstream in the body had a difficult time to get to all the extremities. I did not know what that meant, I just thought that he was very sick.

When Kristófer stayed at the NICU I hardly wanted to touch him or take care of him, I just wanted his father to do everything that needed to be done with him. We felt like he was not our baby but we felt sorry for him so we had to take care of him. He was so little and weak and he just laid there in his glass box, with parents who did not want to keep him at all and that thought it would be best for everyone that he would not make it!!

After 5 days at the NICU the doctor told us that tomorrow we might just take him home, he was doing so well that they trusted him to go home. I thought the doctor was crazy, I didn’t want to take him home at all, what was I suppose to do with him at home?? All alone?? No doctors or anything…..I didn’t trust my self to take him home and I did not want to, I was also very scared of being alone with him. When we came home it was all very strange, no glass box and no tubes or monitors peeping at you all the time. The breastfeeding was hard but I thought to myself that I was not going to give up. I was very numb and didn’t know what I felt……but time went on and so did my feelings towards Kristófer, I started to feel that I did care about him and that I was so happy he did not need a hart surgery. I thought I could never love him, but he was proving me wrong time by time.

Before I was mad at Kristófer not being what I was waiting for and I was grieving the healthy baby I did not get. When I was pregnant my mum came to my house to decorate our little boys room, all the cloths were ready in the drawers. I remember telling my mum when Kristófer was born "We have everything ready at home and now there is no healthy baby" and my mother told me that he also needed a room and a bed to sleep in and cloths just like every other baby. She was right he needed everything just as a healthy baby....and he is healthy....he just happens to have something little extra.....and he also gets a little extra love!!

Last Saturday we just finished our last lesson in infant swimming workshop and because Kristófer loves the water and swimming so much we have decided to continue to the next advanced workshop. Here is a picture that was taking of Kristófer diving, only 5 months old :)

And after swimming he gets real hungry......

and sleeps like a baby!

I recommend infant swimming to all parents, especially if you have a baby with special needs. I see a big difference since we started going to these classes on Kristófers development. The stimulation they get from the water is really good for them and it also makes movements easier for them and of course the parents enjoy it a lot!

Hi i´m Kristofer´s father just wanted to check in my first post.

Kristofer has very good work ethic he did three workouts today. One easy one with his mum before his daily powernap at noon, second one with his physical therapist at 3 pm. And then infant swimming lessons at 6 pm with me and his mum.

He was preety exhausted after he got dressed and fell asleep right away.

I´ve played basketball most of my life and i´ve always been extremly devoted to my workouts, i can see that in Kristofer´s character right away. Plus he loves compliments...i think he gets that from me also.

Well just a few lines this time...more to come later.

Hi, we are Kristinn and Thelma from Iceland and we just had our first baby Kristófer Karl who is turning 6 months on the 27th of august. He has something extra....extra 21st chromosome (aka down syndrome). He sure has change our life completely.

The other day when I was searching the internet I found the page of Down syndrome new mama, I was looking at the pages and I start chatting with one of the mom on there that just started a blogg, so we have decided to join this blogg and tell our story here and hopefully we can share some experience on here as others do.

So this is a start.....more to come :)
